Snake Charmers

SCAD is working with the Snake Charming Community to combat the difficulties they face from such a hazardous, unrewarding occupation. The main aim is to rehabilitate the community through introducing alternative employment opportunities.

The families of this community live in houses just big enough to sleep in and they share these with the snakes they have caught. SCAD has improved this situation and has constructed a house for each family.

A supplementary school has been provided for the children and gradually the newer generations are escaping the treacherous occupation of snake catching and taking up more promising, alternative ways of earning a living.

A Self Help Group has been established and through this, SCAD has encouraged saving so that they can have access to internal loans and also to secure bank loans which are used to assist them in new income generation opportunities.
