Dry Land Farmers
It may look a beautiful picture but this farmer needs more than bulls to make his life beautiful
In the harsh and unforgiving climate of Tuticorin, small and marginal farmers are struggling to have successful crops. In a land that is drought prone, where the development of agricultural technology is alien, these farmers and their families are finding themselves in increasing debt.
Through the Government sponsored SCAD Farm Science Centre (Krishi Vigan Kendra), these farmers are helped to adopt the skills and motivation they need to implement initiatives which will help them to tackle the weather and money lenders.
This includes the facilitation of irrigation tank renovation, and the construction of check damns and farm ponds, so that these dry land farmers can make the most of every bit of rain, which falls.
To unite the community, Farmer’s Groups have been established and it is through these that Farmers are given training on dry land agriculture, access to Government initiatives is highlighted and food security practices are encouraged.
