People should have access to a predictable income....

The main sectors of employment in the region are agriculture, salt production and fishing. The erratic weather patterns, which cause drought, ferocious winds and monsoon rain, mean that work is seasonal and inconsistent, which inevitably means that income is too. The advancement in technology is alien to them or even a threat to labourers.

In desperate times, it is an appealing option for the poor to borrow from moneylenders. But, what start out, as relatively small sums of money, soon become dauntingly large debts, as the tax rates are phenomenal. Thousands are being exploited, bounded in labour, and children are working for debts caused by their grandparents desperation.

To escape debt, men often migrate. Families are left behind and as a result they become fragmented and the strength of unity is lost.
